strange fruits – Portraits of Women in Music History
From left to right: Barbara, Peaches, Bettina Wegner, Betty Davis, Nina Simone, Little Simsz, Poly Styrene, Pussy Riot, Billie Holiday, Patti Smith, Nico, Ebony Bones
During the lockdown of winter 2021, I looked for inspiration in my studio and reflected on who the people who had previously inspired me were. I listened to a lot of music. Music has always played a central role in my life. I decided to portray female musicians that I have admired since I was a teenager. It started with punk and wave idols like Sioux Sioux or Poly Styrene. Through the project I discovered many other great musicians and their music.
They are strong women who go their own way, often far ahead of their time.
Thanks to the authors of the byteFM music radio station Kristin Theresa Drechsler, Diviam Hoffmann, Marius Magaard, Johanna Schmidt and Paula Steinbauer for the great texts on the portraits.
